Why do you need automatic alarm?
Automatic alarms on oil separators are not optional – for systems in accordance with EN 858 they are a core requirement for compliance and risk control. EN 858 specifies automatic warning devices for critical oil layer and liquid levels, and their function must be checked at least every six months by experienced personnel.
Iceland’s Environment Agency guidance requires separators to be equipped with monitoring/alarm equipment and specifies that the device must be tested every six months with records kept—making routine service a mandatory part of operating compliance.
Service Inspections of Oil Separators
Clear responsibility for oil separators
Operators have a clear responsibility to ensure that oil separators are inspected regularly in line with applicable standards (e.g. EN 858) and the Environment Agency’s guidelines on oil separators.
Not optional – a mandatory obligation
Service inspections are not optional, but a mandatory obligation. Organisations that take environmental protection seriously will make sure that every oil separator under their control receives regular service inspections.
ISO 14001 and oil separators
For organisations certified to, or working in line with, ISO 14001, the procedures for operating, maintaining, and inspecting oil separators are a concrete environmental aspect. They should be explicitly addressed in the environmental management system and its documented controls.
